Do you know the names of this year’s most talented designers and artists? CFDA Fashion Awards have recognized and crowned exceptional contributions to American fashion on Monday, June 6 in New York City, with many talented creatives and artists in attendance.
CFDA Fashion Awards 2016 was a celebration of talent, having rewarded the year’s most brilliant designers and artists, receiving well-deserved recognition for their accomplishments. Among the winners were Mansur Gavriel for Accessories Designer of he Year, Orley for the Swarovski Award for Menswear, Paul Andrew for the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design, Brandon Maxwell for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear, Marc Jacobs for Womenswear Designer of the Year and Thom Browne for Menswear Designer of the Year.
The highlight of the evening came from American soul/pop vocalist, performer, multiple Grammy Award winner and film star Beyoncé winning the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (CFDA) Icon Award. As we know, fashion and music intertwine perfectly together, both being processes of creation. Music, just like fashion, is a representation of one’s identity, which explains why previous winners of the CFDA Icon Award have included Rihanna, Pharrell Williams and Lady Gaga. Certainly, no other artist deserved such recognition more than Beyoncé this year.
The singer stepped on a stage dressed in a glittery Givenchy suit and Christian Louboutin heels to accept the Award from famed designer and president of CFDA Diane von Furstenberg.
The 2016 CFDA Fashion Awards honoured David Bowie during the Board of Directors’ Special Tribute, in which Beyonce’s perfectly tailored Bowie fit perfectly with the theme. The best moment of Beyoncé’s appearance on stage was her sincere and powerful acceptance speech, where she stated that her love for fashion started all because of her mum and her grandma. “Most of you guys don’t know this but my grandmother was a seamstress”, she said. “My grandparents did not have enough money and could not afford my mother’s Catholic school tuition, so my grandmother sewed clothes for the priests and the nuns, and made uniforms for the students in exchange for my mother’s education. She then passed this gift down to my mother and taught her how to sew.”
Beyoncé mentioned that it was actually her mum that, designed her wedding dress, prom dress, her first CFDA Awards dress, her first Grammy dress and many of her other outfits. The singer proclaimed that fashion is “a tool for finding your own identity, expression and strength”, thanking her mother, uncle and grandma for showing her that having a presence is far more than the clothes you wear and physical beauty. “Thank you for showing me to never take no for an answer. Thank you for showing me how to take risks, work hard, and live life on my own terms.
The speech left an overwhelming impression on the audience, and Queen Bey left us all incredibly touched and inspired. The artist never ceases to amaze us, something we have learned from the surprise releases of her two most recent albums.
What can we next expect from Queen Bey?
